Ground, Rules, Paintings: A Quartet
GROUND, RULES, PAINTINGS: A QUARTET
The exhibition of the ‘Quartet’: Richard Bell, Peter Joseph, David Saunders and G R Thomson, offers no figuration, no representation and, certainly, no illustration. It is a demonstration of pure painting.
We may be encouraged to think that fundamental research concerning the materiality of painting belongs to the past, but we have not yet dealt with what this painting/these paintings can teach us today.
We are dealing with a renewed “language” of painting that “offers a form of experience more physical than imaginary” – a language whose potential we have yet to exhaust.
The title of this exhibition is a judicious one, as the word ‘quartet’ belongs to the field of music. As sound calls more for sensations than for images, we should give (in) to the moves that rhythms and coloured chords transmit to, imprint upon, our bodies. We should make our way from cold to warm colours, vibrations to 'aplats', lightness to masses. We should listen to the fructuous dialogue of geometric or aleatory combinations, open our eyes to infinitely delicate nuances and play between translucidities.
Colour pulsates, cueing plays of planes (and planes playing) … This magisterial encounter enables us to grasp the specific rules that govern each painter’s work. The conversations that we are fortunate to overhear in the space of our small Foix gallery are a true gift of international calibre. They provide us with a foretaste of ‘Transforming Surfaces’, an exhibition that will be staged in London in June 2018.
